Hearing further Light through Podcasts...

If you follow Masonic forums, Facebook groups, Reddit, or any of the countless other “online” places where Brethren gather to discuss the Craft, you can’t help but notice that Masonic education is definitely a hot topic. Anyone with a computer or a smartphone and an idea to share can do so and share it instantly with anyone who seeks it around the world.

Brethren are taking advantage of this technology by producing some top-notch content through “Podcasts”. For those not familiar, a “Podcast” is similar to a radio talk show. Instead of listening over the radio, one uses an “app” on a smartphone or computer to subscribe to the audio content. Each show is delivered automatically to your device as the creator releases it.

As I began my journey in the Craft a few years ago, I found many of the podcasts to be helpful in answering questions I had about history, how other jurisdictions operate, or just hearing discussion about events Brethren were either planning or had already attended. This content really piqued my interest in all things Masonry and also provided much needed entertainment during the many hours I spend commuting to Baltimore and back. I’ve made friends with some of the creators and we’ve attended several events in the Mid-Atlantic region that we first learned about on some of the more popular podcasts.

Whether your interests are more esoteric, or if you are just looking for some entertaining discussion, I hope you find a few of the shows below interesting. Simply load up your podcast “app” (example: Podcasts on iOS, or Google Podcasts on Android devices) and search for the titles below.

  • The Common Gavel Podcast - Produced by the Grand Lodge of Maryland, A.F.&AM. - A great podcast from the Grand Lodge featuring interviews, education, general information, etc. A must listen for any Maryland Mason.

  • Whence Came You - One of my favorites, produced by Robert Johnson. Brother Johnson’s content features readings and discussions of research papers and other Masonic topics. This podcast is prolific in the online Masonic community, and the production quality is world-class.

  • The Masonic Roundtable - “A Weekly Program with Masons from across the country”. Not only is this a great podcast, but the producers meet live every week. Do yourself a favor and tune in live if you can. The discussion is always great. These guys put on the “300” event in Alexandria in 2017 and Odenton No. 209 was well represented!

  • Masonic Lite Podcast - If you are looking for some podcast that “regular” guys produce, with some good humor and serious coverage of great topics, Masonic Lite will help you pass some time and have fun doing it. I still plan to try to set up breakfast with the hosts soon. Hopefully we can make a trip up to Lancaster and make that happen!

  • The Winding Stairs - Produced by Brother Juan Sepulveda, this beautifully produced podcast features a wide range of Masonic topics. Brother Sepulveda is a gifted artist and a truly great guy. If you’ve ever had the pleasure to meet him, he literally lights up the room. Check out his content!
